“I do not understand how a man can live without some small place of enchantment” – Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Watched a video last night “In Marjorie’s Wake” from PBS by Equinox Documentaries. Highly recommended to all. It is about 2 women who recreate a trip that Marjorie Rawlings and a friend took over 75 years ago along the St John’s River. She was an author who preserves the memories of old Florida in her fiction. Cross Creek and the Yearling are two of her most famous.

This video goes through my “place of enchantment” not so small but magical.

Common Gallinule – Orlando Wetlands Park – April 2015

“If you don’t like the road you are walking on, start paving another one.” Dolly Parton

The sand hill cranes were traveling. I later saw them walking down the middle of the road – outside the park about a mile or two from where I first spotted them. Sand hill cranes concern me – they do not seem to have an awareness of cars. I’ve encountered them on roads several times, seemingly unconcerned with the cars.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing. you will be successful.”   – Albert Schweitzer

These two birds are so different that it is difficult to think they are the same species. As a side note I spend far to much time wondering about why males and females of different species are so different and how this supports survival.

Mystery – Along the Road Rt 46 – April 2015

“Like wildflowers; You must allow yourself to grow in all the places people thought you never would.” E.V.

I think I may try for wild flower Tuesdays. The name would work better on Wednesday – So perhaps I’ll move my bird day to Tuesday. Hmmm decisions. |:>)

Mushrooms

Assorted Mushrooms – Lake Monroe Wildlife Management Area – April 2015

Found a new spot. Lake Monroe Wildlife Management Area, part of the St Johns River system, this primitive park is along the eastern edge of Lake Monroe. It was a very wet hike, swampy, but a nice old oak forest and pine upland area. While the birds were noisy they were well hidden.  Dragon flies were epic with some nice flowers about.

I’d have to guess I was the first on the trail for a while, first hike where I actually soldiered through the swamp, getting quite wet in the process. Well worth it – I was able to engage my “living in old Florida” fantasy – it was excellent – I will be back.
