Found a new spot. Lake Monroe Wildlife Management Area, part of the St Johns River system, this primitive park is along the eastern edge of Lake Monroe. It was a very wet hike, swampy, but a nice old oak forest and pine upland area. While the birds were noisy they were well hidden. Dragon flies were epic with some nice flowers about.
I’d have to guess I was the first on the trail for a while, first hike where I actually soldiered through the swamp, getting quite wet in the process. Well worth it – I was able to engage my “living in old Florida” fantasy – it was excellent – I will be back.

Experimenting with higher ISO. This was very early yesterday morning – ISO 1600. It helps, picture is still a bit dark overall but clearer than usual. Later in the morning I was able to handhold and make some pretty sharp pictures.

“Suppose time is a circle, bending back on itself. The world repeats itself, precisely, endlessly.” Alan Lightman
I’ve been delinquent on my book reporting. I am behind a few. The Accidental Universe by Alan Lightman is a wonderful collection of essays guaranteed to keep your brain tumbling for days.
My favorite segment was when he explained why bees make hexagonal wax compartments in the honeycombs. Turns out that the hexagon is a shape that can be made and fitted together with the least amount of wax, and it will always fit anywhere so bees can work independently on their chambers and connect them later – assured that the comb will be perfect. Amazing!!

“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.” – Henry David Thoureau
Early morning bonus, I was able to follow this limpkin around for a bit. Love seeing birds like this in a suburban environment.
