Red-Bellied Woodpecker – Orlando Wetlands Park – May 2015
I wonder if anyone has ever pried one off a tree to see if their belly is actually red. I probably have 100 pictures of red bellys, but I’ve never seen their belly!
I think that there’s a haiku in there somewhere.
Unfortunately this guy was on the shady side of the tree.

“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.” Kalil Gibran
This was quite a violent encounter. In the top picture, one gator has the other in it’s jaws. After the encounter there was a clear winner and the loser left in a big hurry, under the watchful eye if the winner. Although I cannot be sure there was no sign of injury to either.
This certainly reenforces the need to respect gators and their power and unpredictability,

“That it will never come again is what makes life sweet” – Emily Dickinson
This bird is getting his courtship plumage going – that blue around his eye is also the color of the inside og his mouth. Couldn;t get hem to say “ah” though.

Relaxing. Based on this past weekends activity I’m guessing that breeding season is in full swing. Sunday morning I saw at least 30 different gators along Wetlands Blvd. And most of them were large males.
