“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Lao-tzu

These pictures were that first step for me. I fell in love with the wetlands on that day. Since that day I have begun volunteering at the wetlands, I started a blog and have posted at least 2x a day since January, taken thousands of pictures and 2 bird photography seminars, read many wonderful books, begun study of birds, enrolled in the first “Florida Master Naturalist” course in the fall. Met many incredible people through volunteering and virtually through blogging.

Thanks to everyone and especially my wife for putting up with me. Lets see what the next 999 miles will bring.

“The destruction of these works of ages is one of several major crimes in the Commonwealth of Florida.” John K. Small 1927

John Kunkel Small was a naturalist active in Florida in the 1910’s and 1920’s. He was witness to the habitat destruction being done in Florida during that era. The above quote is only part of a much larger rant. Maybe 200 years ago habitat destruction was understandable, but 100 years ago we knew better – much as we do today. Doesn’t seem to matter.

“Without some goal, and some effort to reach it, no one can live.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The Indian Blanket flower at top is usually orange and red – my favorite flower – I was happy to find this variant.

“Behind the squaw’s light birch canoe
The steamer rocks and raves,
And city lots are staked for sale
Above old Indian graves.” – John Greenleaf Whittier

While Whittier was speaking of his native New England this verse is true of most of our country.
