Wattoola is the native American name for the bird – specifically Creek indians – from William Bartram’s Travels.
It is interesting the way Sand Hills and their young hang out together – mom, dad, and babies. As spring progresses I will be interested to see if other birds mimic this behavior. Ducks follow mom, but dad’s not usually around.

I have to go to the Wetlands Park and try to spot this bird! Beautiful.
I have seen 2 families here. Not sure how long they stay – the kids are getting older, but hopefully they will be back next winter.
I always learn something new visiting your blog! I haven’t been lucky enough to see one of these birds yet, didn’t even know they existed! Great photos, as always😊
Thank you. Winter is the best time to spot them, when migrating birds join our natives.
