I’m going to try a new feature which will run periodically on either Tuesday or Thursday. It will of course have a picture and a bit of a message. I started out blogging, wanting to improve my writing skills and haven’t done that. I’m working on a bit about Rachel Carson, having just finished reading her biography. I’m going to try to have it ready for Thursday. Any ideas about how many words are enough – without being too many?


The bluebird is either a juvenile or female – the males are completely blue.
The European Starling was first brought to the US in the early 19th century by Shakespeare enthusiasts. Now among the most numerous song birds in the country. Wonderful coloring.
We will be leaving Tennessee after this. Next couple of posts will be from the Okefenokee Swamp on the Georgia – Florida border.


I have a few pictures from bird feeders. Those are big in Tennessee, sure brings the birds in – not sure if money would be better spent on wildflowers and habitat. Certainly the birds would not be as reliable – but….

First of the Tennessee pictures. This park is in Sullivan County in Eastern Tennessee it is built along an ancient highway originally used by native Americans and later used by early settlers to open up the land west of the Appalachian mountains.

These birds, while cautious were not afraid. Fortunately there were plenty of fish about. Alligators prefer fish since they are much easier to catch and deal with than birds.
We counted 8 alligators among the flock of over 150 birds feeding in this area.
