Got One – Orlando Wetlands Park – May 2015

“To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance.” – Buddha

There was great abundance at the wetlands last weekend. Top pic has 6 species of birds in it. Great and Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, and a Wood Stork. The last two are endangered.

Obviously an abundance of fish. See Great Egret in the second picture with one in his mouth! So except for the alligator fight – which was epic, there was only some minor squabbling if some of the birds got too close to each other.

I’ll also have an abundance of pictures – expect more.

Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.” Kalil Gibran

This was quite a violent encounter. In the top picture, one gator has the other in it’s jaws. After the encounter there was a clear winner and the loser left in a big hurry, under the watchful eye if the winner. Although I cannot be sure there was no sign of injury to either.

This certainly reenforces the need to respect gators and their power and unpredictability,

“What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”- Henry David Thoreau

The more I read in Florida’s American Heritage River by Mallory M. O’Connor and Gary Monroe the greater appreciation I have for the lands along the St Johns River. I need to schedule a trip north a bit to explore Payne’s Prairie and the Oklawaha River – a tributary of the St Johns. It may have to wait until fall, dawn is getting to be too early for long range exploring, unless I leave at 4 AM – early even for me.

Pair 0 Owls – Lake Monroe Park – May 2015

“Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings” – Salvador Dali

Whistling ducks are really pretty, their feathers appear like they are painted. It’s black belly whistling duck season – so these are probably not the last ones you’ll see.

As for the owls – not a great picture, just proud if myself for spotting them. So I wanted to share. And yes, screech owls really do screech, I heard them for quite some time after they left their roost.

“You must not blame me if I do talk to the clouds” – Henry David Thoreau

Wetlands today and a history jaunt around Lake Monroe tomorrow. I’ve been reading a fabulous book Florida’s American Heritage River – Images from the St John’s Region by Mallory M. O’Conner and Gary Monroe. It explores the history of the region through it’s art.

Lake Monroe was the southern terminus of the navigable portion of the St John’s River and consequently of the exploration of Florida. In the 1800’s steam ships ran between here and Jacksonville. While I’m somewhat familiar with Sanford, I’ll be exploring DeLand and the northern shore of Lake Monroe.

Lots of history surrounds Lake Monroe which was the southern terminus of the St John’s river,

While we don’t celebrate this here – I think we should! Bring out the maypoles. Perhaps we could replace Cinco de Mayo with this day. Then celebrate Mexican independence in September.
